MiBism 009: Rebel and Revel in it

Posted in: Lifestyle

It takes a certain degree of courage to chuck convention and try new things.

I was raised in a traditional home with conservative values and high morals. It was expected that I would work hard at school, get good grades and always, always respect my teachers. Right or wrong, they were the people in my authority and I was not to question them or doubt their integrity. My job was to honour and obey and I did that very, very well.

Convention and habit would then have it that I'd continue on this track of respecting authority in the workplace, honouring orders barked at me. The culture in this work environment where I was employed for 13 years was such that every single employee sucked it up or quit. We worked ridiculously long hours often 6 days a week to prove ourselves. Many of us would take blame, backtalk and demeaning interrogations. It was my first job, I was young and eager and thought this was just the way it is in all companies Not until I left did I realize that what took place in those offices was not normal; we had been verbally abused on a daily basis and some irreparable damage had been done to those of us who did not walk away.

That experience of working for a tyrant has made me a rebel today. I will not work for anyone. I will not rely on someone to tell me what to do, how to do it, when to do it.

I am a rebel and I am reveling in it:
I will not shake in my skirt when I hear my name called by 'his' voice on the intercom.
I will not hyperventilate because I was caught in traffic and am now 8 ½ minutes late to work (That he notices. That I'm at the office 'til 9 pm, he doesn't)
I will not say yes to everything for fear of not being valued.
I will not choke on an apple while working through my lunch.
And...
I will not ever again respect someone just because of their position of authority.

You, whoever you are, will have to prove you're worthy of my respect and only then will you receive it.

Iam a rebel. Iam turning my back on convention and becoming my own darn boss. I have exceedingly grand expectations of myself, demanding nothing short of excellence and diligence in every task I take on and I have never been happier.

I am a rebel. Iam carving out a career of my own, on my own terms. I am making a huge investment in myself. I am a rebel, saving my soul, rebuilding self-respect and I am reveling in it.
